ThisinformationwastakenfromaninternalnewsletterofTheKnowledgePartnershipLLP(TKP),acompanywhichoffersprojectandsoftwareconsultancyworkforclientsbasedinZeeland.Thenewsletterwasdated2November2014anddescribestwoprojectscurrentlybeingundertakenbythepartnership.
ProjectOne
Inthisproject,oneofourclientswasjustabouttoplaceacontractforatimerecordingsystemtohelpthemmonitorandestimateconstructioncontractswhenwewerecalledinbytheFinanceDirector.Hewasconcernedaboutthecompanysupplyingthesoftwarepackage.‘Theyonlyhaveanannualrevenueof$5m’,hesaid,‘andthatworriesme.’TKPanalysedsoftwarecompaniesoperatinginZeeland.Itfoundthat200softwarecompanieswereregisteredinZeelandwithannualrevenuesofbetween$3mand$10m.Ofthese,20wentoutofbusinesslastyear.Thiscomparedtoa1%failurerateforsoftwarecompanieswithrevenuesofmorethan$100mperyear.Wepresentedthisinformationtotheclientandsuggestedthatthiscouldcauseashort-termsupportproblem.Theclientimmediatelyre-openedtheprocurementprocess.Eventuallytheyboughtasolutionfromamuchlargerwell-knownsoftwaresupplier.Itisapopularsoftwaresolution,usedinmanylargercompanies.
Theclienthasnowaskedustohelpwiththeimplementationofthepackage.Abudgetfortheprojecthasbeenagreedandhasbeendocumentedinanagreed,signed-off,businesscase.Theclienthasapolicyofneverre-visitingitsbusinesscasesoncetheyhavebeenaccepted;theyseethisasessentialforeffectivecostcontrol.Wearecurrentlyworkingwiththeprimaryusersofthesoftware–accountmanagers(usingtimeandcostdatatomonitorcontracts)andtheprojectsupportoffice(usingtimeandcostdatatoimprovecontractestimating)–toensurethattheycanusethesoftwareeffectivelywhenitisimplemented.Wehavealsogiven‘dropin’briefingsessionsfortheclient’semployeeswhoareenteringthetimeandcostdataanalysedbythesoftware.Theyalreadyrecordthisinformationonalegacysystemandsoalltheywillseeisabrightnewuserinterface,butweneedtokeeptheminformedaboutourimplementation.Wearealsolookingatdatamigrationfromthecurrentlegacysystem.Wethinksomeofthecurrentdatamightbeofpoorquality,sowehaveestablishedastrategyfordatacleansing(throughoffshoredatainput)ifthisproblemmaterialises.WecurrentlyestimatethattheprojectwillgoliveinMay2015.
ProjectTwo
Inthisproject,theclientisthedeveloperoftheiProjector,atinyphone-sizeprojectorwhichisportable,easytouseandoffershighdefinitionprojection.Theclientwasconcernedthattheirproductiscompletelydependentonaspecialistimage-enhancingchipdesignedandproducedbyasmallstart-uptechnologycompany.TheyaskedTKPtoinvestigatethiscompany.Weconfirmedtheirfears.Thecompanyhasbeentradingforlessthanthreeyearsandithasaveryinexperiencedmanagementteam.Wesuggestedthattheclientshouldestablishanescrowagreementfordesigndetailsofthechipandsuggestedasuitablethirdpartytoholdthisagreement.Wealsosuggestedthatsignificantstocksofthechipshouldbemaintained.TheclientalsoaskedTKPtolookatestablishingpatentsfortheiProjectorthroughouttheworld.Again,usingourcustomercontacts,weputthemintouchwithacompanywhichspecialisesinthis.WearecurrentlyengagedwiththeclientinexaminingtheriskthatamajortelephoneproducerwilllaunchacompetitiveproductwithfunctionalityandfeaturessimilartotheiProjector.
TheiProjectorisduetobelaunchedon1May2015andwehavebeenengagedtogiveadviceonthelaunchoftheproduct.Thelaunchhasbeenheavilypublicised,aprestigiousvenuebookedandover400attendeesareexpected.TKPhavearrangedformanynewspaperjournaliststoattend.Theproductisnotquitefinished,soalthoughorderswillbetakenatthelaunch,theproductisnotexpectedtoshipuntilJune2015.

TKPonlyundertakesprojectsinthebusinessculturewhichitunderstandsandwhereitfeelscomfortable.Consequently,itdoesnotundertakeassignmentsoutsideZeeland.
TKPhas$10,000,000ofconsultant’sliabilityinsuranceunderwrittenbyZeelandInsuranceGroup(ZIG).
